How many soldiers were in the Roman Army?
it had about 450,000 soldiers.
What types of soldiers did the roman army have?
The Roman army employed all types of soldiers. First and foremost there was the milites or common soldier with his spear, sword and shield. They also had cavalry, slingers, bowmen and artillery men.
Nowhere does the Roman talent for organization show itself so clearly as in its army. The story of the Roman army is an extensive one, demonstrated in part by the scale of this chapter.
.
The first part of this chapter considers the history of the Roman army (concentrating on the legions), trying to explain as much background as possible.
.
The Romans managed to conquer so many countries because they had such a good army.
.
The Emperor used the army to protect Rome and to control the people it had conquered. Some soldiers were away from their families for long periods of time
When a soldier had served in the army for 25 years he could become a citizen of Rome.
.
Organisation of the Army
The army was organised in a very simple way:
5000 Legionaries (Roman Citizens who were in the army) would form a Legion.
.
The Legion would be split into centuries (80 men) controlled by a Centurion.
The centuries would then be divided into smaller groups with different jobs to perform.
.
Roman soldiers had to be tough.
They were expected to march up to 20 miles per day in line, wearing all their armour and carrying their food and tents.
.
Roman soldiers were trained to fight well and to defend themselves. If the enemy shot arrows at them they would use their shields to surround their bodies and protect themselves this was know as 'the turtle'.
.
They fought with short swords, daggers for stabbing and a long spear for throwing. They also carried a shield for protection as well as wearing armour.
.
Why didn't armies try to use Roman tactics and Equipment in the middle ages?
The term dark ages does not refer to lighting conditions
it meant that there was a severe lack of knowledge/intelligence..after the fall of the roman empire there was much disorder and a lot knowledge was lost..including military tactics
Why did the Roman soldiers behave themselves in the Roman army?
they had to behave propely because otherwise the generals would take them to prison and kill them. However, they had to be good and listen to what the generals say.
What did a Roman soldier have to do to get into the Roman army?
good question and thanks for asking,
Well if he was the right age, he would either be called or would join the army. The army would then take care of any necessary training by sending the new recruits to a training station in the center of Rome.
