Honestly it just unhygienic. Its a different story if your are on your periods. For surely we should be clean at all times.
In islam cleanliness is half of faith.
The importance as to why we haveto keep our nails short is that it causes germs and dirt under it preventing the water to touch the skin when taking whudu or ghusl. It then becomes invalid.
