Well I think that you should talk to the guy first- it might make it a bit more awkward but if he knows what's going on it could make the situatuon a bit better (he probably doesn't even know things are awkward between you guys) . Are you and this guy very close?
You can't really break the ice- the best solution I can think of is to just talk to him and hope for the best.
