I haven't even heard the rumors :o But I would never think that at all! Regan is such a great guy!
When it comes to tracing a picture, you have to be aware of the double standard. Children are encouraged to trace because drawing vertical, horizontal and curved lines are important for motor skills and shi*, helping us learn how to write. If you're a functionally literate adult who can read and write , then following the outlines of a drawing is frowned upon, and some people would even consider you as a cheater. But is anyone truly original? When someones widely regarded as a true innovator does that mean they derive there style from out of thin air? Let's take an extreme example like Michael Jackson, he's possibly the greatest entertainer of all time. Who could forget his smooth dancing movements and mannerisms, but if you're old cultured enough to remember James Brown, you would also know that he is another one man show and you would also be aware of the fact that Michael was influenced by him. Was Drake being unoriginal when he openly admitted to using the hash tag style because of Big Sean? It's interesting how he can be perceived as a thief because Sean is still active. I think if there is a significant gap of years between the student and the teacher like Jackson and Brown, people are fine with that. But being influenced by someone you are coexistent with is a whole different story. Maybe being the same age within the same era is unacceptable. Unoriginal. Copying is only acceptable if the material is given a grace period I guess. The concept of originality is a bit over blown whether you're making music or tracing a picture. Whatever art form you choose, it's important that you wear your influences on your sleeve proudly, there's no sense in hiding them. Anything in music you can possibly think of has been done already, and the people we consider original simply took their creativity through their teacher. By the way another interesting thing about tracing that should be noted is no matter what drawing you use as a template, whether you copy it note for note and draw across every single line, the finished product can be something that fits your style, your sensibility, your own flavor so it can reflect YOU. What can possibly be unoriginal about that? Now that I've schooled you on originality, how does it feel to be stupid?
Oh p.s this took me a couple of hours to write so make sure you put some time into your next reply.
