Maybe he was trying to protect you. He may have wanted to be more than friends, but, since you've been close friends for so long, he would always be there for you, and was maybe delusional of what he wanted. That's all I can think of without knowing who it is

He wanted to be more than friends that was the problem. we were great friends for around 4 years and then he began getting angry at me for doing what I wanted to do, and annoyed that we didn't talk or see each other enough. I couldn't be more than friends with him so it turned into quite a large fight and we haven't spoken since.
