Well if I was I was in your situation I wouldn't confront him again about it and move on, if you think you don't have a chance with him, then the next best thing to a relationship is friendship. But some people find it much harder to move on than others, so you could confront him one last time about it and see what happens, if he doesn't feel the same way then give it a couple of weeks and tell him you have moved on (even if you haven't). I guess the only thing you can do is admire them from a distance :/

Hmmm not really but I'll give you some advice anyway. Thats really stink of them to say they don't want you to be friends with one another. No matter what one has done to the other your friends don't get to decide who your other friends are. You should tell them that you want to stay friends with both of them and if they don't take that into consideration then tell them how unfair it is that you have been dragged into the middle of the situation because of their problems.
