Why is the world round?
The gravitational compressive force exerted on a body the size of the earth (or any body with a diammeter of over about 1000 kilometres) is great enough to compress any material (even solid rock) into a spherical shape. When such a body contracts under its own gravity, the force exerted is equal in all directions; hence the body becomes spherical.
That is why all the planets in the solar system are spherical in shape; but the asteroids are irregular in shape (being under the critical size; they do not exert enough gravitational compression to become spherical).
Actually, the earth is not precisely spherical; because the centrifugal force developed through the rotation about its polar axis causes the earth to bulge very slightly at the equator. The shape is called a spheroid ('almost a sphere') of rotation.
