You must read The Great Indian Novel. They mashed up the characters of Mahabrharata and the Indian struggle for Independence.
It's by Shashi Taroor. A magnificent work.

I've read two books on the Mahabharata. They are publications of Anmol Prakashan.They covered the entire story, but still, it was not the original peice. I want to read something that goes closest to the original story. So I read everything I can which is related to it. :)
